Cultivate the Energy of Love

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

This statement by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of my favorite sayings about love. For me it resonates on a deep, soul level because it highlights the fact the love is a CHOICE. This is a huge and powerful concept…one that can literally transform our individual lives and the well-being of our planet.

Imagine if we all regularly chose love over hate. It is far too easy to get caught in emotions such as hate, anger, fear (which I believe is often at the root of such feelings) and react to life from that space. We’ve all experienced fear…in our relationships, in our professions, with regards to finances or health, and in pretty much every other aspect of our lives. Often, in these circumstances, our instinct is self-preservation and survival. These protective instincts can cause us to close our hearts and act in unhealthy ways, often causing harm to ourselves or others.

What if instead of allowing those heavy emotions and energies to determine our actions, we paused and found the courage to keep our hearts open? What if we decided to stick with love and acted from that space? How would that transform our relationships? How would that impact how we engaged with our work? How would it change our self-talk and how we treat our bodies, hearts, minds, spirits? How would it change the way we treat the earth and all the beautiful beings we share this planet with?

Emotions such as anger, hate or fear are incredibly useful. If we pause and allow ourselves to feel them and be with them without reacting impulsively, we can learn so much about what is still in need of healing in our lives or where we need to take proactive action to transform circumstances. If we take the time to explore those energies, connect to our hearts and act from love, our words and actions serve to bring more light, healing, peace and harmony to the world and to our individual lives.

So, in celebration of this Valentine’s Day, I invite you to consciously cultivate the energy of love in your life. Celebrate all the love that already exists in your world. Allow yourself to fully receive the love the Universe is sending your way. It may come from the most unlikely or surprising sources. Pay attention and give thanks for all the many and varied forms love takes. And encourage your heart to stay open even in the face of challenges. When you find yourself experiencing uncomfortable emotions, allow yourself to feel them and to come back to love because it is always more powerful than hate, fear or anger could ever be.

To assist you in cultivating not only love but also a greater sense of inner peace, contentment, joy and relaxation, here is a special guided meditation my friend Sally Tinker Smith helped me record. She titled it Big Love Healing. I hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to share your thoughts below or email me at Much love and many blessings to you.
