5 Tools for Creating True Joy in 2015

This is one of my favorite times of the year, second only to the first days of Spring. Both of these times are full of the promise, hope and anticipation new beginnings offer––an opportunity to press restart, wipe the slate clean and rededicate ourselves to our highest priorities. Whether you revel in the great drama of a new calendar year or think it’s a bunch of silly hoopla, there’s no denying that a great many people all over the world are co-creating the very exciting and powerful energy of a new day, so it’s to your advantage to harness the energy of promise and possibility to create the conditions that will bring you joy, blessings, peace and prosperity in the new year. How can you do that? Here are five wonderful tools…

1. Nourish Your Spirit First and Foremost

Whoever you are, whatever your life circumstances, hopes and dreams are, the only way you will be able to experience true joy is if you take time to nourish your mind, body, heart and spirit with the best sustenance. Many times, most of us get so caught up in getting somewhere in the future and taking care of the array of tasks we have laid out for ourselves, we neglect and abuse our own beings. In this Winter Retreat talk delivered at the end of 2013, great spiritual teacher Thich Nhat Hanh offers incredibly wise and practical insights on how to make the transition to a new beginning that truly honors your whole being. The talk offers many techniques to bring lasting healing, peace and joy to your mind, body, heart and spirit. Give yourself the gift of wisdom and guidance that can help you create lasting positive change by taking the time to watch this talk (perhaps in segments) and practicing the ideas offered.

2. Dedicate Yourself to Your Dharma

The one thing that is sure to bring you lasting joy and inner peace is fully dedicating yourself to your dharma, to your life’s purpose by owning and utilizing the gifts you were blessed with. Many people think having a great calling or a gift is for some select few who are given some special power or benediction to live life realizing and enjoying their gifts and talents. I have come to realize that each and every one of us is born with special, unique capacities and passions that bring us immense satisfaction and fulfillment when pursued. When we give ourselves permission to truly live a life from our authentic core, we unleash incredible reserves of energy, creativity, gifts and talents that bring us immense joy and benefit those we serve. If even a small part of you longs to discover and live a life true to your calling and dreams, read (really, study) The Great Work of Your Life by Stephen Cope. A dear and wise friend recently shared it with me, and I am in awe of how beautifully Cope captures the journey to coming home to our true selves. Again, a resource that is both inspiring and offers a practical roadmap.

3. Release What No Longer Serves

Through navigating my own healing journey and assisting others on their paths, I have come to realize that true and lasting transformation in its essence is about letting go of what no longer serves. Sometimes, we think we need to somehow acquire something out there to create positive change in our lives, but everything we need is already within us. The beautiful, bright, brilliant light of our spirits is already shining within us; what we need to do is clear the muck that’s blocking its radiance. And we do this by letting go of the ideas, patterns, wounds, energies and things that no longer serve our highest and best good. The more we’re able to let go of what doesn’t serve, the more we’re able to welcome in and allow what does serve our highest good to shine brightly. Two previous posts on Clearing Emotional Energy and Clearing Your Personal Space offer great resources on how to do both energetic and physical clearing to help you bring healing and joy into your life.

4. Allow Yourself to Dream a New Dream

Once we release what no longer serves, we’re able to be much more clear and intentional about what we want to experience and manifest in our lives. I’m generally not a big fan of manifesting and law of attraction stuff, but I do believe we are co-creating our lives with our thoughts, intentions and actions. The basic laws of cause and effect are at play not only in the physical universe but also our individual lives. When we begin letting go of our blocks, we open ourselves to possibilities we may never have imagined before. We’re able to experience states of joy and peace that we didn’t know were possible. We’re able to see that we can create change in our lives and the world. We’re able to dream new dreams and to move towards their realization with much greater trust, courage and confidence. A wonderful resource to facilitate this process is Effective Intentions, Goals and Resolutions by Jose and Lena Stevens. A very insightful and useful tool to help prepare the way for dreaming and realizing new possibilities.

5. Surround Yourself with Support

No matter how well we plan or how faithful we are to our intentions, life has a way of throwing curve balls at us, and it’s not always easy or advisable to navigate our journeys alone. One of the truths I learned through my shamanic training and have found to be utterly true is that support is always available to us; we just have to ask for and receive it. Depending on what goals and dreams you vision for yourself, getting the assistance of a coach, mentor, healer or guide can be hugely beneficial. Through individual healing sessions, you can get incredible one-on-one support in letting go of what no longer serves, getting re-energized and empowered to realize the fullness of your potential and to create real, lasting joy and serenity in your life. In addition to getting personal support, it’s also important to surround yourself with supportive, like-minded people, ones who are living or moving towards the type of life you vision for yourself. The benefits of a loving, supportive community cannot be understated. When you have doubts, feel like giving up or feel scared to take the next step, having a loving, understanding mentor and community can give you the strength and courage to stay the course and overcome the challenge.

I hope these ideas and resources serve you well in the coming year. If you have any questions about anything shared here, please don’t hesitate contact me. I am so very excited for the beautiful possibilities and opportunities 2015 is sure to bring and wish you the very best. May you be blessed with an abundance of joy, peace and prosperity in the New Year. Much love and many blessings to you all.
